You know you want to get your skin checked and treated before you hit the beach, so now is the perfect time to check your skin’s condition to make sure it’s good to go.
To make sure your skin is getting all the treatment it needs, take your time to spend some quality time with it, according to dermatologist Jennifer Nee, MD, FACS, an associate professor of dermatology at Duke University School of Medicine.
“If you’re really careful, you can actually minimize the chances of something going wrong,” Nee said.
“You might need to make certain adjustments.
But I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with being patient.”
Nee recommends checking your skin frequently with a doctor to make an appointment if you’re concerned about how you’re feeling or if you have any skin concerns.
If your skin isn’t responding to your routine, Nee suggests a daily skin test called a TLC.
TLC tests for your skin type, which in turn tells you if you need more treatment.
If your TLC test shows a high number, you should take extra care.
“There are a lot of different things that can happen to your skin and you may not know what they are,” Nees said.
“And that’s one reason that TLCs are so important because you don’t have to worry about it.
If you have a high TLC, you need to be on your toes and keep on the lookout for that,” NEE added.
Nee said to keep skin clean and moisturized, wash your hands thoroughly before and after each skin test.
Once your skin has been checked, Nees says to apply a moisturizer that contains humectants to the skin.
She says to use a serum or cream that contains a good amount of humectant.
Nees recommends using a humectantly-rich cream that includes ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba, and lanolin, which help to soften skin.
“If it’s a little oily, you may want to use some moisturizer to help loosen it up and make it feel soft and supple,” Nes said.
Some people may find that it takes a few minutes for the humectancy to start, so it may be best to start with a simple moisturizer and continue doing gentle treatments as needed.
Nees says the best thing to do when you have trouble with your skin care routine is to follow the routine and take care of yourself.
